Freeweaver Studio is a contemporary weaving studio rooted in London’s rich textile heritage and its dynamic, fashion-led culture. Established to make textile practice accessible, the studio offers a space for individuals of all backgrounds to engage with the process of handweaving — whether for garments, homeware, or personal artistic exploration.

We offer a range of hands-on workshops, from focused sessions such as Make a Cushion, Make a Scarf, or Make a Table Runner, to more in-depth courses including Introduction to Creative Weaving, available in 1, 4, or 8-session formats. For those with a specific project in mind, we also offer personalised sessions, including our signature Weave Your Own Coatexperience.

In addition, the studio explores more advanced approaches to cloth construction, including warp manipulation techniques through specialist workshops such as Railreed and Stepping Reed, offering expanded possibilities in structure, texture, and form.

Dutch-born textile artist Erna Janine began her weaving journey in 1994 with a two-year apprenticeship at a Rudolf Steiner-based studio in the Icelandic highlands. She later studied contemporary textile design and has spent the past 30 years independently teaching and practicing weaving.

Her work has been shaped by residencies in India and Japan, and exhibited internationally, including in the United States, the Netherlands, India, and the United Kingdom. As the founder of Freeweaver Studio in Deptford, Erna is committed to fostering creative expression through sustainable textile practice and community engagement.
