About the Studio
Freeweaver Studio is a contemporary weaving studio in historic Greenwich, London, specialising in Japanese floor-loom weaving. Rooted in a philosophy of intuitive making and working with natural fibres, the studio welcomes complete beginners alongside experienced makers, providing a calm and inspiring environment to explore the creative possibilities of handwoven cloth.
We offer a range of immersive workshops, from introductory sessions and one-day experiences to longer courses in creative weaving. Participants can weave scarves, cushions, table runners, garments and bespoke textiles, or develop individual projects through independent loom time and personalised tuition, including our signature Weave Your Own Coat programme.
Alongside its workshop programme, Freeweaver explores innovative approaches to woven structure through specialist techniques such as Railreed and Stepping Reed, encouraging experimentation with texture, form and cloth construction. The studio also collaborates with artists, designers and cultural organisations on bespoke textile commissions, research and contemporary craft projects.
Sustainability
At the core of Freeweaver Studio is a firm commitment to sustainability. We prioritise natural fibres, work with earth pigment dyes, and actively engage in community outreach to share knowledge, tools, and creative opportunity. Our aim is to nurture a slower, more meaningful relationship with textiles—one that respects both tradition and innovation.
With an ongoing residency program (launched in summer 2025), Freeweaver Studio is growing into a vibrant hub for textile arts, where creativity, craft, and community come together through the language of cloth.
