Coat Weaving - A fully guided process including materials, weaving, and professional tailoring

The Freeweaver “Weave Your Own Coat” workshop was first developed in 2021 in collaboration with London Craft Week. It offers participants the opportunity to create a fully handwoven garment, combining textile making with contemporary tailoring.

The workshop is currently structured as a flexible, individual process, allowing each participant to begin at a time that suits them. Upon request, 

The Process

The experience begins with an initial visit to Freeweaver Studio, where the participant meets with the studio to discuss the project in detail. This includes considerations of material, colour, structure, garment style, and timeline. Measurements are taken, and a plan is developed in collaboration between the participant, Freeweaver Studio, and the tailoring partner.

Once the design and approach have been agreed, the participant’s place is confirmed and the weaving process begins.

A loom is then allocated exclusively to the participant, remaining set up until the full length of cloth has been completed. During this time, participants receive guidance and technical support throughout, including an introduction to floor loom weaving where needed.

Participants are able to work independently during studio opening hours and are asked to complete the weaving within a one-month period. Where time constraints arise, Freeweaver Studio can complete the weaving in accordance with the agreed design.

From Cloth to Garment

Once the woven textile is complete, the cloth is prepared and transferred to a specialist tailoring facility in North London. There, the fabric is cut and carefully constructed into a finished garment.

After approximately three weeks, the completed coat is returned to Freeweaver Studio for collection.

A Contemporary Textile Process

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with the making of a garment from its earliest material stages. By weaving the cloth itself, participants develop a close relationship with texture, colour, and structure, resulting in a piece that is both personal and unique.

Payment structure

• £150 consultation & booking fee (non-refundable)

• £630 balance before weaving begins

Payment is taken at the start of the weaving process following the initial consultation and agreement of the project.
